I've always wanted to make a difference - at home, at school, in the community, in this world. I just never knew how I could. I joined Leadership my sophomore year, and aside from not being able to even imagine not having ASB as a part of my life since then, I also found the answer to my question. Now, I want to leave Shorewood a better place than I found it.
As ASB President, what can you do for Shorewood?
As ASB President, I think I would definitely be a different figure to Shorewood students than our past presidents have been. Usually when I think of "president," I see a large figure who many people look up at but can't really talk with at eye-level. I'm not exactly large-sized... But as ASB President, I want to connect with the students at Shorewood on many levels, and by doing that I can raise participation and involvement at our school events. My experience on Leadership also gives me the knowledge on not only what Shorewood needs, but how to accomplish them. That's how I can be a benefit to Shorewood students: by reaching out to them and making things happen.
What makes you the best candidate?
It's definitely hard to compare myself to my opponents, because quite frankly I'm not as ambitious as Maia or Alex and I'm sure I'm not as popular as Luke N. or Brian. But what I can bring to Shorewood next year will be so much greater than what ambitions or popularity can. One of my greatest attributes is my ability to connect with people. I have always been able to talk to students of all grade levels. I can bring the loving and enthusiasm that Shorewood needs at this point because I love the people here, and I want to get to know all of them. Another one of my best fronts is my nature of taking initiative. Taking initiative is essential to being a great leader. So even though I'm not the loudest of the candidates, I know I'm definitely the one who can break barriers and make the impossible possible.
What will you do to increase school spirit?
By giving Shorewood something to have pride in! We're going to need quite a few changes around here, and it's going to have to start with the attitude about our campus and even about our own students. Karen McLendon-Laumann wrote a poem that goes like, "Smiling is infectious, you can catch it like the flu. Someone smiled at me today, and I started smiling too." That's my inspiration. I want to make Shorewood a brighter place through infecting everyone with this new love disease.
How can you mediate between the students and staff members at Shorewood?
As a respectable student, it isn't hard for me communicate with Shorewood's staff members. A teacher actually suggested my candidacy for president (although I didn't consider her seriously at first). I would be a great mediator between the students and staff because I can understand and convey the perspectives of both groups. I'm a very approachable person, and in that sense I can speak with many students and listen to their opinions on the many issues about Shorewood. That means I represent the student body to the greatest extent, and I can create better relations between students and staff members.
